ACTIVITIES IN PREVIOUS YEARS

During the more of 35 years the Mijas Foreigners Department has organised various major international events. These events of integrity have basically been celebrated in Mijas for the first time and have then been copied by other municipalities along the Costa del Sol.

In 1989 the Mijas Foreigners Department creates the first International Day, pioneer in Spain. An event that offers the best of each country: folklore, gastronomy, and customs. The Mijas International Day is awarded the title of “Dia de Singularidad Turistica” (Singularity Day of Tourism) by the Provincial Government of Malaga. Some years later the department decides to extend the event to two days and changes the name into International Festival. Due to the enormous popularity it is later even prolonged to three days. The International Festival is held in the main square of Mijas at first and then extended to different emblematic areas of the village: such as the Constitution Square and the Muralla Gardens, Calle San Sebastian, Calle Malaga and the Barrio Santana. Stands are set up representing up to 26 different nationalities, serving typical dishes as well as selling products and handcrafts of the country represented. Up to four stages offer up to 12 hours of non stop music, song and dance, each day the event is carried out. Street parades are also held in the main streets of the village, where the public can join in. After organizing the International Festival for 25 years, the Foreigners Department of the Mijas Town Hall, decides to take a new path and creates a new event:

The The Friendship Day. The idea is to concentrate on a single country and show the best of its culture, gastronomy, music and traditions in one day. The Friendship Days are a great success and a total of ten editions are organised with different countries:

Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Ireland, Great Britain, Germany, USA, Ukraine and Italy. We like to thank the Consular Body of Malaga, who have supported each of the events that the Foreigners Department has organized, attending to inaugurate the event together with the Mayor of Mijas at the Nations Wall. Our gratitude is also for the great collaboration with associations and NGOs, businesses and companies, press, artists, local schools, churches, song and dance academies etc. of the represented country to be able to offer a faithful representation of each country during each Friendship Day.

In 2007 the Mijas Foreigners Department and the London Blues Pub “Ain´t Nothin´But…” organise the first International Blues Festival. The festival takes place in the main square Virgen de la Peña of Mijas Pueblo. All concerts are free of charge. Bars are set up with international drinks and food. The Blues Festival is celebrated for eight years. Later on the Mijas Tourist Office is taking over the organisation and in these days it is celebrated in the Mijas Auditorium.

The Mijas Foreigners Department throughout the years organise different Christmas activities such as the International Christmas Fair, where different nationalities, represented by local clubs and associations showed the best of their Christmas cuisine, cakes, sweets and mulled wines, as well as Xmas decorations on different stands. On stage, the different countries perform typical Xmas songs and dances. This event is celebrated in Mijas Pueblo, Las Lagunas but is most popular in La Cala de Mijas. The event is celebrated for about 18 years with great success. In 2011 the department decide to set up a Christmas Market similar to the ones in Germany and that instead of it lasting just one day like the International Fair, it be set up all the Christmas period. The market is set up in the middle of La Cala de Mijas, 12 stands selling Christmas handcrafts and decoration from different countries. Every day there are Christmas performances. On weekends there are performances by local choirs and chorals, dance academies and local flamenco groups. There is also special Christmas workshops for the children. The event is organised by the department for five years, until it is passed on to the Festivities Department who continue to hold the market every year.
