PROYECTOS DE VOLUNTARIADO
“I SPEAK ENGLISH” VOLUNTEER PROJECT
The Programme set up called “I Speak English” by the Mijas Foreigners Department at local schools and high schools is helping Mijas children with their English language. Foreign residents volunteer to go and speak to the school children on weekly bases.
For many years already the programme has been running successfully. The project started at the “Virgen de la Peña” school in Mijas, one of the schools that is included in the bilingual project of the autonomous government. It was such a success that soon other schools of the municipality also joined this project. There also are some volunteers in French at the “La Vega” school.
The Town Hall, schools, volunteers and students have benefited enormously from this experience. The Foreigners Department has even received petitions from schools from other provinces who were interested to know more about it in order to carry it out in their educational centres.
If you would like to share your time to help school children improve their English (you don’t need to speak Spanish) contact the association AIVOMI by email: email@example.com
VOLUNTEER INTERPRETER SERVICE
In the early days of the Foreigner’s Department, it was the staff of the department that would go into the medical centre to translate for the few foreigners that needed the service. The department would translate between doctor and patient. With the constant growth of the foreign population, it got to a point that the staff could not cope with the demand and attend at their office at the same time.
Due to this situation, in 1996 the department created a volunteer Group to cover these needs. Some years ago the department assisted in creating the association AIVOMI (Association of Volunteers Interpreters in Mijas) that nowadays got approximately 40 voluntary members. They attend patients and foreigners in various languages covering a daily service at all three medical centres of the municipality, CARE specialist centre, and the Civil Guard in La Cala of Mijas and Fuengirola.
AIVOMI ALWAYS NEED VOLUNTEERS – IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BECOMING A VOLUNTEER INTERPRETER, PLEASE CONTACT THE ASSOCIATION – firstname.lastname@example.org
